MASON — Mason Mayor Leon Clark and city council members stole the show by having Jeff Haueter’s family join him as he was being honored at the Mason Area Chamber of Commerce’s 2012 Awards Night.
Clark made a special city proclamation in the form of a resolution announcing March 9 as “Jeff Haueter Volunteer Day.”
“I wanted Jeff’s family up here because they should share in this honor,” Clark said. “They helped make Jeff what he is today.”
Haueter was named 2012 Citizen of the Year by the chamber for his charitable efforts and contributions to the community as manager of the Mason A&W and member of local service organizations.
The award and proclamation was the culmination of several honors for Haueter and others in the Mason community on Feb. 8 at the El Dorado Banquet Center.
Clark included some comedy in his resolution – which mentioned Haueter’s relationship as a young kitchen manager with “car hop” waitress Linda at the A&W years ago. Haueter would later get choked up as he thanked her for being there for over 30 years.
Volunteer work
Haueter’s work as a Mason Optimist, with the Knights of Columbus and through his church were commemorated.
“I was worried I couldn’t fit all of his good deeds on this,” Clark said. “Jeff doesn’t do this to get a pat on the back. We all know this is just what he does.”
Others that were given special awards included Mason resident Scott Shattuck, who was recognized for “his leadership and hard work to share with others the military heritage of the Mason community.”
Shattuck, a ‘79 graduate of Mason High School, involves many of his students at the middle school in Civil War reenactments at many of the city’s parades and ceremonies. “It’s very evident that Mason is a special place to live,” Shattuck said. “It is a privilege and major responsibility to be part of something like this community. It should never be taken for granted.”
Summit Campus teacher Jeremy Mills was given the MACC’s 2012 Educator of the Year award, Dart Bank was given the 2012 Excellence in Business Award, Robin King-Fuller was given the 2012 President’s Award and the Mason Schools Foundation was given a special recognition award.
