Bryanton confirms he will not seek reelection

MASON — Mike Bryanton made it official Wednesday: After 18 years as Ingham County clerk, he said he will not seek reelection.

Bryanton said he intends to support Lansing City Clerk Chris Swope for the county clerk’s position because he believes Swope is experienced at administering a clerk’s office and running elections. Swope has said he intends to run for the county clerk post, which carries a four-year term. And Tuesday, state Rep. Barb Byrum, an Onondaga Democrat, announced she will run for the post.

Byranton, 65, said he is stepping down because it’s time “for a set of fresh eyes” for the office. He said he feels he has improved the office during his tenure by electronic scanning documents and allowing residents to perform some county business online.

He said he has no specific plans once his term expires Dec. 31.
