Mason schools to participate in Jazz Fest

MASON - Mason Public Schools will be among 38 other schools from across the state as well as regional professional jazz artists, creating the Eighth Annual Thornapple Arts Council Jazz Festival in Hastings on April 15-16.

Mason Public Schools will be represented by three jazz bands involving 80 Mason Middle and High School musicians in Hastings on April 16. The Mason Middle School Jazz Band will perform at the Walldorff Bistro at 9 a.m. The Mason High School Jazz Bands will perform at the Thornapple Playhouse: Jazz Band II at 10 a.m. and Jazz Band I at 11 a.m.

Hastings becomes "Jazz Town USA" as the business district opens its doors for two days of live jazz.

The school musicians who perform in the festival will be given the opportunity to play for enthusiastic crowds, as well as receive a clinic in the jazz art form from professional musicians also playing at the festival.

The Thornapple Festival is part of the national celebration of jazz during the entire month as designated by the Smithsonian Institute. The festival is produced by the Thornapple Arts Council and is made possible through the support of Hastings City Bank, The Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs and the support of many local businesses in and around Hastings.

There will be Headliner Performances by the Thornapple Jazz Orchestra, Steel Heads Steel Drum Band, Boogie Woogie Babies Vocal Ensemble and the Western Michigan University Jazz Orchestra.
