MASON - Tumultuous weather in 2011 flooded the city, but it also became an opportunity for city employees to shine.
That's why city employee Ron Selby and the workers in the department of public works' street and water division was named to receive city honors as "Employee of the Year" and "Department of the Year," respectively.
"A 100-year flood event and tornadic winds caused havoc in Mason and these employees came to the rescue," City Manager Martin Colburn said.
The flooding last July was so high it overran a lift station and threatened Mason's water supply.
Workers had to set up a pumping station in order to maintain adequate levels. High winds knocked down about 60 poles, which created a dangerous area.
Colburn said not only did the crew help when the city needed it during the storm, but just as important was after the storm, when cleanup was needed.
"Selby's can-do attitude is very encouraging," Colburn said. "That's an attitude that rubs off on people that he works with."
Selby also maintains Maple Grove Cemetery and works hard in the Parks and Forestry Division, making sure Mason's parks are maintained despite adverse circumstances.
"Selby works with numerous volunteer groups to help maintain the parks like Rayner," Colburn said. "He is part of a community that really cares about itself."
As for the street and water division, the group of workers made sure city services, like power and safety were maintained, Colburn said.
They also had to work on several street repairs as the water caused sinkholes and concrete to become uneven.
Colburn said every year he makes sure certain city employees are recognized for their hard work and dedication to the city.
