MASON - The Mason Public Schools Board of Education has approved revisions to its policy on discrimination and education rights for students.

The revisions meet state-led changes to public school policies concerning discrimination based on race, sex and creed and equal opportunity.

"This was a matter of updating our policies to match those handed down by the state," Mason Public Schools Board President Ralph Beebe said.

The policy updates are also part of a quasi-audit of student-related policies that are spelled out in handbooks.

The revisions are a major goal of the school policy and curriculum committee for the school year. The committee has listed an "a continual review of all policy series" as well as a review of student handbooks from all schools and the athletic department.

Beebe said the policy revisions were reviewed by the district's lawyer before being read twice by the board in consecutive meetings.

"The revisions don't include major changes to policy," Beebe said. "They simply update the verbiage to meet state standards."

Beebe said an upcoming challenge for the school board will be the district's budget.

He said he expects a mid-year update on the current budget with amendments were necessary.

He said the board will begin wrangling with the 2012-13 budget in May.
