MASON -- State and local investigators are working to confirm the cause of a house fire Nov. 7 that left a 62-year-old man dead, officials said.
City fire officials, as of last Friday, had not confirmed the identity of the man killed in the late afternoon blaze.
The man's name was not released because his identity still had to be confirmed through dental records, said Mason police Sgt. Ed Hude.
The fire at the two-story wood-framed house in the 400 block of East Elm Street was reported at about 5:45 p.m. last Tuesday.
Firefighters were at the scene within five minutes to find the house engulfed in flames, officials said.
The fire was under control by about 6:30 p.m., Hude said.
Mason Fire Chief Kerry Minshall, one of the first people on the scene, said he was outside the home when he heard a loud explosion he believes came from an oxygen tank the man used. The man also was a smoker, Minshall said.
The man's roommate had left sometime before the fire to get food, officials said.
Firefighters from the Mason, Leslie and Dansville fire departments responded, along with Ingham County's heavy rescue team. A Michigan State Police fire investigator is working on determining the cause.
