MASON - Margaret Doolittle was the ultimate kindergarten teacher.

That's according to longtime friend and co-worker Amy Hopkins, who worked with Doolittle at North Aurelius Elementary before Margaret passed away in February.

"I'm lucky to have known Margaret Doolittle in my profession and in my life," she said.

Hopkins, a third-grade teacher at North Aurelius, spoke about Doolittle at a memorial service and dedication on Nov. 11.

A bronze statue of a woman reading to a child on a bench now welcomes parents and students to the school.

"It was the perfect statue," Hopkins said. "It symbolizes what she was all about."

Doolittle, taught kindergarten for 25 years from 1979 to 2004. When she died of cancer, she left money for the school.

"We wanted to use it to make something permanent," Hopkins said. "A book, although a great thing, could be lost in time. So we decided to have a sculpture."

The sculpture was built on a stone walkway and patio to accentuate it, Principal Mike Prelesnik said.

"It was a fitting tribute," he said. "We had a school-wide assembly for her."

Doolittle family members joined in the ceremony at the assembly.

Daughters Sarah Block and Katie Tamms were there along with grand kids Will and Grace Tamms.

Hopkins said she was proud to speak about her friend Margaret.

"I wanted to focus not on what we lost but how better the community is after having her live and work among us during her life," Hopkins said.

"Many people are better for knowing her."
