MASON — An Ingham County commissioner proposed Tuesday to dissolve the Ingham County Road Commission amid concerns that the agency is now in turmoil.
Andy Schor, a Democrat, proposed essentially dissolving the governing board for the Road Commission and bringing road agency operations “in-house” into a new county department – the Department of Transportation and Roads. It would governed directly by the county Board of Commissioners.
The Legislature is considering a bill allowing county board of commissioners to bring road commissions “in-house.” The bill is now pending in the House.
Schor argues the existing Road Commission is an unnecessary layer of government and that eliminating it will result in new efficiencies and cost-savings. Schor’s proposal will be referred to the County Services Committee, for review.
In recent weeks, other commissioners have proposed asking Shirley Rodgers, road board chairwoman, to resign or asking all road commissioners to step down. Critics have blamed Rodgers for what some believe is a lack of trust between road agency leaders and employees. Rodgers has denied the charge.
