Hundreds of Mason parents, business owners and Bulldog supporters packed the University Club March 11 to bid for everything from fine art to dinner out to oil changes -- all in an effort to raise funds for the Mason Public Schools Foundation.
The foundation is the primary funding source for the Mason Technology Infusion Project, responsible for placing "smart boards" and state of the art technology in classrooms across the school district.
The GALA had a live and silent auction in addition to a "grand" prize raffle for an all expense paid trip to Mackinac Island's Grand Hotel.
Long tables swam with over a hundred silent-auction items throughout the ballroom.By the midway point of the evening, bidding wars had broken out on many of the bid sheets in front of the items, which ranged from memorabilia signed by sports celebrities to pottery and local golf packages.
Attendees made their way down the auction tables, writing bids on several sheets and, keeping an eye on their favorite items.
"It's exciting to be doing this evening's event again. The Mason Public Schools Foundation has not hosted this type of fund-raiser for about five years.
Great response
"The tremendous response we received from sponsors and the community has been fantastic and it is a win-win event for our community and schools," said foundation president Laura Cheney.
AJ Hilton of Fox 47 served as master of ceremonies for the evening and the incomparable team of Doug and Bill Sheridan quickly took control of the live auction.
After a wonderful meal, the auctioneers stepped up and got the crowd raising their bid numbers for such items as a balloon ride, donated by Tom Bergeon, a week at a condo at Boyne Mountain, donated by Pat and Lari Hayhoe, personal sculpture, donated by Nancy Leiserowitz, and a beautiful polished granite outdoor bench donated by Hammond Farms.
There were ten live auction items in all that net the foundation almost $6,000.
The Red Carpet GALA with sponsorships, advertising, raffle, live and silent auctions raised almost $20,000 for the foundation.
"The band's great, the food's great, and I think the auction is fantastic," Mark Dillingham, Mason superintendent of schools said. "We're so proud of the Mason schools' supporters. It seems to me that in adverse times, people are more generous."
"We're seeing that tonight."
