Jim Mulvaney returns to City Council

Former Councilmember appointed to serve until the next city election

MASON - The Mason City Council has appointed James Mulvaney to fill a vacancy on the council.  The vacancy was created when Councilmember Neal Johnson resigned in September.  Mr. Mulvaney, along with former councilmember Leslie Bruno and planning commissioner Kelli Green, applied for the vacancy and were provided an opportunity to address the council at the Oct. 17 meeting.  Mulvaney was unanimously chosen to fill the vacancy through passage of Resolution No. 2011-34.  The text of the resolution is included below: 

CITY OF MASON
CITY COUNCIL RESOLUTION NO. 2011-34 APPOINTMENT TO FILL CITY COUNCIL VACANCY October 17, 2011

WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Mason, by motion of this date, and in accordance with Section 5.2 of the Mason City Charter, has accepted the resignation of Neal Johnson and declares that seat vacant.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED, that the City Council, in accordance with Section 5.5 of the City Charter, does hereby appoint James Mulvany to fill the vacant seat until the first meeting following the canvass of the city election set to be held November 6, 2012.

Upon passage of the resolution, Mr. Mulvaney was sworn in by City Clerk Deb Cwiertniewicz.

Councilmember Mulvaney is no stranger to city government.  He recently served on city council from 2005-2009, and has served prior terms on council as well as the planning commission and historic district commission.  Councilmember Mulvaney will serve until the regular city elections of 2012. The person who places 5th in the 2012 elections will fill the remaining two years of this unexpired term. This means voters will elect 5 councilmembers in 2012 and 4 councilmembers in 2014.
